The Highlight of Our Journey

Description
This painting is a deliberate step towards something other than Photo-Realism. Sam Campbell has a routine about choosing an ice-cream in his local parlour. All of his being craves Bubblegum flavour but the sophisticated adult on his shoulder tells him that he really ought to pick Pistachio. This painting is the double-scoop of artistic indecision - the Bubblegum of colours I want to use that aren't present in the actual scene, and the sensible Pistachio of accurate tone and occasional restrained use of colour. My intention was for it to be gently fantastical in its colouring, for the sky to be too orange and the houses to be too red. I wanted to see how this might affect the meaning. As it turned out, it isn't too dissimilar to the actual scene I encountered on one of the coldest mornings I can ever remember. I like having the warm colours in the distance and the cold colours in the foreground - tweaking the nose of Painting's authorities. Honestly, I'm like Johnny Rotten some days. The frosty field lends itself to my adapted Pointillist style of painting. It is mainly a combination of Phthalo Green and Magenta, two colours I learnt create a great grey.

South Yorkshire, United KingdomI am a painter and curator based at Bloc Studios in Sheffield. My paintings are made in an adapted pointillist style using acrylic on board. The majority of my subjects lie on the periphery of suburbia – sheds, unusual constructions and isolated buildings under repair – these interest me because they could stand as metaphors for the process of constructing the painting itself.
