Contemplative Space Ritual
Sean Williams
£1,200
Description
The painting is based on a photo I took of the small field in front of St Mark's Church in Broomhill in Sheffield. It is a designated space for contemplation. A tree had been cut down and sawn into logs. Someone had arranged these logs to form a rough circle, not unlike Stonehenge or similar ancient sites. It brought to mind my love of prog rock and the several lyrical references to how the ancients worshipped. I thought about Hawkwind's fantastic live album 'Space Ritual', thus having a title to work with, and feeling pleased with myself. The work itself is made up of thousands of tiny dots of acrylic paint. This technique enables me to introduce a host of colours into each form, as well as capture the play of light, which was integral to this painting. I hope that people find this engaging. I want people to contemplate a painting which is about, amongst other things, the act of contemplation - spending time to think and reflect. The painstaking rendering also suggests time spent. This is folded into the overall meaning.

South Yorkshire, United KingdomI am a painter and curator based at Bloc Studios in Sheffield. My paintings are made in an adapted pointillist style using acrylic on board. The majority of my subjects lie on the periphery of suburbia – sheds, unusual constructions and isolated buildings under repair – these interest me because they could stand as metaphors for the process of constructing the painting itself.
