Description
Frank's Funhouse is based on a photograph kindly given to me by my friend Jade Lauren. I prefer to work from my own photos so that I can claim full ownership of the finished work; this image felt worth making an exception for. It suggests a story. The scene is empty, as if it may have been abandoned, yet someone is maintaining the spectacular hanging basket, an explosion of colour amongst the dull surroundings. It feels as if something is about to happen. Increasingly so, for me, painting is colour and I look to seize any opportunity to include it in my work. Colour is joy, and I consider experiencing joy to be a political act. My painting is named after Frank Zappa. I have been listening to a lot of his music lately - a heady mix of jazz rock and lyrical wit, vulgarity and nonsense. I was hoping to paint like Zappa's music, but this piece required a flatter style of paint application.

The majority of my subjects lie on the periphery of suburbia – sheds, unusual constructions and isolated buildings under repair – these interest me because they could stand as metaphors for the process of constructing the painting itself.
