The Wrathful Sky
Lizzie O'Grady
£3,000
Description
This journey began as a casual exercise in cloud observation, a moment of tranquility amidst life’s chaos. However, as the months unfolded, I found myself drawn back to it, compelled by the relentless tide of news depicting a world engulfed in turmoil—both environmental and political. By October 2024, the devastation was palpable; destruction loomed large on the horizon. The sky transformed, taking on a deep, ominous red, infused with a sense of fury that mirrored the strife gripping the planet with a darkness, a haunting reminder of our fractured humanity. Each crack of thunder resonated with the weight of our collective anguish, as the world seemed to teeter on the brink of chaos.
This piece was selected for the London Art Biennale which took place in Chelsea July 2025. Only 350 paintings were selected from over 10000 entries.

About the artist
Lizzie O'Grady
Greater London, United KingdomLizzie O'Grady
Greater London, United KingdomWith a 40-year career that spans art publishing, digital architecture, and graphic design, I have returned to my true passion—painting—with renewed vigor and a profound perspective shaped by decades of visual exploration. As a proud self-taught artist, I harness my extensive graphic design background to vividly convey the dynamic interplay between the natural world and the built environment.
While the Italian Futurist movement deeply influences my work, I continually evolve my style, drawing inspiration from broader movements like Orphic Cubism, Synchromism, and Cubism. The Precisionists, especially Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic New York Skyscrapers, first ignited my fascination and led me to discover extraordinary architectural forms that explore the fluid boundaries between the organic and the artificial.
In the past year, my initial paintings of clouds have embraced a softer quality. Each piece starts with a structured architectural form, yet these structures transform gracefully as it unfolds. They become windows into an ethereal realm—some radiating tranquillity while others evoke a sense of biblical wrath.
