Description

Moorland Passage explores the shifting atmosphere of the Yorkshire moors through expressive marks, layered colour and an open, winding path. Warm ochres lead the eye into the distance, cutting through deep purples, muted greens and flashes of pink beneath a restless sky.

Combining Inktense and soft pastel, the painting moves between suggestion and abstraction. Areas of exposed paper become part of the landscape, allowing the winding path to remain a quiet, continuous presence amid the changing terrain.

About the artist

Nga Quynh Ngo

North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Based in North Yorkshire, I create expressive landscapes that move between observation and abstraction. Working primarily with soft pastel and mixed media, I am interested in colour, shifting light and the physical qualities of the surface, allowing marks and areas of exposed paper to become part of the landscape itself.

My work spans a range of artists’ papers, and my recent practice increasingly incorporates traditional Vietnamese Dó and Điệp papers. I am drawn to the distinctive textures and surfaces of these materials and the possibilities they offer for exploring landscape in a more tactile and spontaneous way. Trained in graphic design at Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, I returned to drawing and painting after many years working digitally, developing a material-led practice that embraces texture, expressive mark-making and the unexpected.
