Description
“I Celebrate Myself” is a multi panelled ceramic wall piece that celebrates freedom and restriction. Figures at the base of the panel appear to dance with joy whilst under the watchful eyes of an oppressive regime. They look up to a pair of heads that are reminiscent of religious icons, calm, peaceful and harmonious. They represent the trail blazers, the protestors and freedom fighters who have gone before us, paving the way for us to enjoy our rights and lifestyles today. To the left of the heads, are a series of letters that at first seem random but on closer inspection spell out slang and derogatory words used to describe gay men.
Using words from queer poet and writer, Walt Whitman, I celebrate Myself is ultimately a positive and celebratory work that embodies joy through adversity.
