Description

This large-scale oil painting, Breaking Through, captures a moment of quiet intensity along the Northumberland coast, where sea, sky, and land dissolve into one another. Broad, gestural brushwork and layered surfaces convey a sense of movement and impermanence, as dense cloud formations press low against a reflective shoreline. Muted blues and greys are tempered by soft ochres and pale yellows, suggesting light emerging through the weight of weather rather than a fully resolved clearing.

The title Breaking Through frames the work as an exploration of transition and persistence. Bands of illumination fracture the cloud mass and echo across the wet sand, creating a visual dialogue between sky and surface. The horizon is subtly destabilised, drawing the viewer into a liminal space between solidity and flux. Stratford’s process-led approach leaves traces of revision and erosion within the paint itself, reinforcing themes of endurance, weathering, and slow revelation. The painting operates less as a depiction of place than as an experiential landscape shaped by time, atmosphere, and perception.
