Description
Backstreet is an exploration of how early morning light can completely transform an ordinary northern alleyway. I’m drawn to these overlooked spaces — service lanes, yard walls, telegraph poles — because they hold a quiet authenticity. At sunrise, however, they become something almost theatrical.
The composition pulls you down the narrowing passage towards a softened, luminous distance, while the sky carries the emotional weight of the painting. I’ve used sweeping, gestural strokes of orange and gold against cooler blue greys to create a sense of energy and immediacy. Those colours are then echoed in the wet surface of the road, where reflections break up the solidity of the architecture and introduce a more fluid, abstract element.
For me, the subject isn’t just the backstreet itself, but the fleeting quality of light — that brief moment when the everyday feels heightened and quietly profound. It’s a painting about atmosphere, transience, and finding poetry in familiar northern spaces.
