Description
A wall piece from my recent Traces & Fragments series. For this project images were collected, gradually over several weeks as walking about Leith (the historic port area of Edinburgh). As these short journeys were repeated, varied, and time is taken to look, details were noticed. Overlooked, ugly, unassuming, ordinary, sometimes richly textured or with contrasting colours. Modern, old, historic. Temporary, permanent. Road markings, graffiti, street art, torn posters, random signs, plants, bins, and building surfaces. Reflecting the layers of history and the physical layers of surfaces, they are textured, cut into, areas mono printed and masked, with glazes and oxides built over the slips, then decals of my photos. The impressed areas are from bisque-fired moulds I created from pressing into the bricks in our studio basement, made just down the road in Niddrie, and scraps of plaster cornice here in the studio.

I build my one-off pieces by hand, and then layer up painted, monoprinted, stencilled and carved imagery. Glazes and photographic decals are added at different stages. Inspiration is often drawn from museum display, tourism/travel and the souvenir.
