Description

Hand embroidery on cotton.

The piece is laced onto canvas and framed within a white box frame, ready for hanging.

Canvas: 20 x 20 cm. Frame: 24x24cm

‘Through dirt, they grow’ functions as a conceptual inversion of the medieval tapestry, ‘The Unicorn in Captivity’. Where the medieval work idealises the unicorn's value and purity by containing the flowers surrounding it, symbols of femininity, within a protective gold fence, ‘Through dirt, they grow’ challenges the notion that these aspects must be constrained to be valid.

In contrast to ‘The Unicorn in Captivity’, in this piece flowers flourish outside the woman’s fence. This externalisation signifies that her essential vitality and agency defy the system of constraint, rendering the physical captivity symbolically meaningless. The piece declares that sovereignty is found in the untamed, aspirational realm of freedom and struggle, rather than in the passive preservation of an ‘untouched’ state.
