Description
This work, as most of my works, was created by improvisation to music. Strongly impressed by 'Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood, its visual adaptation and the soundtrack, I painted to music by Adam Taylor - the movie soundtrack. Starting point was the music, chosen mixed media (oils, pigments, PVA, ink, acrylics in a limited palette inspired by the visuals of the movie) shoved onto the wood randomly and gradually finding their way through music, bringing to the surface the emotions raised by the story and the music. Feeling that the painting is being created by processes underneath the conscious thought and decisions are being made in other realms, during the painting process I become an observer, discovering what is being revealed. Specific behaviour of the media – how they mix or not mix, how they interact with each other also dictates the movement that is happening on the ground. The play (sometimes turning into wrestling) of the intertwining elements: music, emotions, memories, impressions, painting materials, movement, reflections and thoughts, becomes also a play between control and letting go, between conscious and subconscious.
The painting process turns into a reflection on a human body – a scene of similar processes – between control and letting go, between pleasure and pain.
