Description

Softlads is a compelling anthology of poetry created in response to Oliver Bliss’ striking portrait series, which explores evolving notions of masculinity. The artworks—shared under Oliver Bliss—navigate themes such as hero worship, body image, activism, sexuality, gender variation, and the history of identity, while also interrogating the influence of social media and the rise of global subcultures shaped by hashtags.

Developed in partnership with The Word Association CIC, this project brought together diverse voices from community groups across the Midlands. Participants were invited to respond to the tapestries through creative prompts, resulting in a rich and varied collection of poetic interpretations.

Poetry offers a unique lens through which to engage with visual art. It encourages personal reflection, emotional resonance, and critical dialogue, allowing readers and writers alike to explore the deeper meanings behind the imagery. By translating visual themes into language, poetry opens up new pathways for understanding and connection—making the artworks more accessible and relatable.

The anthology includes five full-colour images from the Softlads tapestry series, alongside workshop prompts designed to help readers replicate the creative process themselves. This structure supports both individual exploration and community engagement, making it a valuable resource for educators, facilitators, and anyone interested in the intersection of art and identity.

Here is a short video regarding the anthology.
