Description
Painted in oils on reclaimed Welsh slate, these works emerged during a period marked by ongoing conflicts and uncertainty around the world. Images of huddled refugees, encountered through news reports and social media, filtered into the paintings through my painting process. Figures gather, dissolve and reemerge, carrying traces of displacement, vulnerability and resilience.
The smoke grey colour of the slate became integral to the series. Its flint like surface seemed to hold a quiet tension, suggesting both endurance and the possibility of everything going up in flames. The material brought its own history and weight to the paintings, grounding these fleeting contemporary images within something older and more enduring.
This series of 23 slate paintings formed the backbone of my solo exhibition Diableries in my hometown of Huddersfield. The artwork is subtly framed so the frame doesn't interfere with the image.
