The Potential Inside

Each sculpture in this series begins as a meditation on what lies beneath the surface — the hidden potential inside every living thing. At first glance, the forms may seem closed, contained, self-protective. But look closer, and you’ll start to see openings, textures, fractures — glimpses of what could be, what’s growing, what’s held within.

These pieces explore duality: strength and fragility, light and dark, inside and outside, hidden and seen. They speak to the tension between protection and exposure — how external forces shape our inner worlds, and how, even through damage or trauma, new forms of beauty emerge.

Each sculpture asks the viewer to look beyond appearance, to see possibility rather than limitation. Just as seeds need the right space and conditions to flourish, the potential within us all waits for light, patience, and the right moment to unfold.

They are not static objects but invitations — to pause, to reflect, and to wonder what might exist beneath the surface, in clay and in ourselves.

"I'm an international, award winning ceramic sculptor who loves clay. The infinite possibilities of clay as a medium appeals to my need to constantly evolve my work as well as my love of learning and challenging myself. I love trying new techniques and pushing the boundaries with much of my work now single fired. Teaching adds another layer to that as I run a membership, classes and workshops from my Cambridgeshire studio." Paula Armstrong
