Description

The image is inspired by Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harman in the Queens Gambit A strong woman defying all odds to become a chess prodigy. The title "Let's Play" is taken directly from the last shot of the series, which appears as text on screen at the end. The small 'play' arrow has been added in the top left and nods to the fact it is on TV, playing to an audience; at the same time inviting us to 'play' the game. Sal's work explores themes of identity and transformation, illustrating how these characters embody different personas both in their fictional worlds and in reality. The concept of "playing" is central, encompassing the roles individuals take on, the emotional entanglements they encounter, and their ultimate triumphs over adversity. This interplay of roles and experiences serves to reflect broader human experiences and the resilience of women in various contexts.

About the artist

Sal Jones

London, United Kingdom

Sal is known for her expressive portraits that capture fleeting emotions rather than fixed likenesses. Working in rich layers of oil paint, she draws on film, media, and her own imagery to create characters who feel both familiar and mysterious. With titles often borrowed from dialogue, her paintings hint at stories without telling them outright, leaving space for the viewer to step in.
