My paintings depict architectural spaces derived from a range of sources and adapted through the painting process. I deliberately select places I have never physically visited, yet which carry an uncanny sense of familiarity.
Rather than representing specific locations, the work explores the experience of being between: between memory and invention, orientation and dislocation, presence and absence. The paintings resist fixed resolution, inviting viewers to dwell in ambiguity and to consider how images shape — and reshape — our understanding of place.
Working in thin layers of oil paint, I build, wipe, dilute and erode the surface, allowing earlier marks to re-emerge. Images develop as much through removal as through application.
Central to my process is an ongoing negotiation between structure and material. A drawn framework establishes spatial parameters yet remains permeable. Within it, the material properties of paint assert themselves — spreading, resisting, pooling and dissolving — so that intention is continually tested by happenstance. The paintings evolve through this exchange between control and unpredictability.
The resulting surfaces oscillate between illusionistic depth and material presence. The viewer’s eye attempts to enter the depicted space, only to be redirected by painterly interruptions back to the surface itself. With sustained looking, structures begin to loosen and dissolve, echoing the fragmented and unstable nature of perception and memory.
Underlying the work is a sensitivity to displacement and estrangement. Painting becomes a way of inhabiting uncertainty rather than resolving it.

About the artist

Nottinghamshire, United KingdomFleur Patrick was born in New Zealand (1979) and emigrated to the UK as a child. Her experiences of displacement and estrangement, and a longstanding sensitivity to perception and place, inform her exploration of memory, identity and belonging.
She gained a 1st class degree in Fine Art before completing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2003. Her awards include the Zurich Contemporary Painting Prize, Amlin Painting Award and Desmond Preston Drawing Award. Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in numerous private and public collections. In 2026, she presented her first museum solo exhibition at Lakeside Arts, Nottingham.
Her paintings explore architectural spaces drawn from found imagery, often depicting places she has never visited but which feel strangely familiar. Working in layered oil paint, she builds and erodes surfaces through processes of application and removal, allowing chance and material behaviour to shape the image alongside deliberate structure.
The paintings exist between memory and invention, clarity and disorientation, inviting viewers to navigate unstable spaces where perception, place and meaning remain unresolved. Through this tension between control and unpredictability, the work reflects on displacement, estrangement and the uncertainty of memory.
